Michael Bliss

Michael Bliss wrote numerous prize-winning books in Canadian and medical history, including The Discovery of Insulin; Banting: A Biography; William Osler: A Life in Medicine; and Harvey Cushing: A Life in Surgery. He received many career honours, including the Order of Canada, honorary degrees from six universities, and honorary Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. For many years he was in demand as a lecturer, speaker and public intellectual in North America and Europe. On his retirement from the University of Toronto, Canada’s national news magazine, Maclean’s, described him as “possibly Canada’s greatest living historian.”
