Margaret Huston (b Houghston). Mezzo-soprano, teacher, b Toronto ca 1878, d near Greenwich, Conn, 1 Aug 1942. She was an elder sister of the actor Walter Huston.

Yvonne Hubert. Pianist, teacher, b Mouscron, Belgium, 28 May 1895, d Montreal 8 Jun 1988; premier prix piano (Lille Cons) 1906, premier prix piano (Paris Cons) 1911, honorary LLD (Concordia) 1981. She first took lessons at the Lille Cons.

(Mary) Frances James. Soprano, teacher, b Saint John, NB, 3 Feb 1903, d Victoria, BC, 22 Aug 1988. She spent her childhood in Halifax and Montreal and took her main formative studies on a four-year scholarship at the McGill Cons with Walter Clapperton.

Judy Fong Bates, writer, teacher (born at Kaiping County, Guangdong, China 22 Dec 1949). Judy Fong Bates IMMIGRATED to Canada with her mother in 1955. Meeting her father in Allandale (now Barrie), Ontario, Fong Bates discovered she and her parents were the only ASIAN citizens in the area.

Ogreta McNeill (b Ormiston). Librarian, teacher, b Gabarus, Cape Breton Island, NS, 2 Aug 1903, d East York, Ont, 21 Apr 1993; ATCM 1932, B MUS (Toronto) 1952, BLS (Toronto) 1953. She was raised in Victoria, BC, where she studied and taught piano. The young John Beckwith was one of her pupils.

Martha Eva Salcudean (née Abel), OC, OBC, professor of mechanical engineering (born 26 February 1934 in Cluj, Romania; died 17 July 2019 in British Columbia). Salcudean was a leading authority on computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. In 1985, she was named chair of the department of mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia. This made her the first female head of a Canadian university’s engineering department. Salcudean dedicated much of her academic career to forging research and development partnerships. She fostered collaboration between universities, government agencies and industry groups in sectors such as mining, pulp and paper and aeronautics.

Mary Lindsay "Molly" Sclater, teacher, author, organist-choirmaster (born 28 December 1912 in Edinburgh, Scotland; died 31 March 2002 in Jackson's Point, ON). ATCM 1938, ACCO ca 1938, B MUS (Toronto) 1939.

Elias began her career as an elementary school teacher in Kugluktuk and Arctic Bay in 1980, and at the same time was the head of the language bureau of what was then still a part of the Northwest Territory's Department of Culture and Employment.

Marie (Marguerite Cécile Alice Louise) Daveluy. Soprano, teacher, b Victoriaville, Que, 20 Mar 1936. She studied 1956-9 in Vienna with Ferdinand Grossmann and Viktor Graef and received a grant from the Canada Council in 1960.

Marcelle (Sister Saint-Armand-Marie) Corneille. Administrator, educator, b Montreal 27 Jan 1923; B MUS (Montreal) 1952, L MUS (Montreal) 1960. She entered the order of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame in 1943.

Margaret Somerville, ethicist, legal scholar, writer (b at Adelaide, Australia, 1942). Margaret Somerville completed her first degree, in Pharmacy, at the University of Adelaide in 1963.

Alexina Diane Louie, OC, OOnt, FRSC, composer, pianist, teacher (born 30 July 1949 in Vancouver, BC). Alexina Louie is one of Canada’s most celebrated composers. She writes music with an imaginative and spiritual blend of Asian and Western influences. Her compositions have earned many prizes, including multiple Juno and SOCAN Awards. Her most significant works include Scenes from a Jade Terrace (1988), Music for Heaven and Earth (1990) and Bringing the Tiger Down from the Mountain II (2004). Louie is the first woman to receive the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music and served as composer-in-residence at the Canadian Opera Company from 1996 to 2002. An Officer of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, she has received the Order of Ontario, the Molson Prize and a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
