Véronique Béliveau (b Nicole Monique). Singer, actress, b Montreal 24 Jan 1955. She began recording at 17 under the name Véronique and made her first tour in Quebec at 18 with René Simard.

Yolande Dulude. Soprano, born Montreal 12 Jan 1931, died there 18 Aug 2003; lauréat (Basile-Moreau College) 1948. After studying piano for a number of years, she began voice study in 1944.

Suzie LeBlanc. Soprano, teacher, actress, harpsichordist, born Edmunston, NB, 27 Oct 1961; honorary D LL (Mount Allison) 2009, honorary D CL (King’s College University, Halifax) 2008.  Suzie LeBlanc is of Acadian heritage, but grew up listening to and practicing classical music.

Joseph Gaétan Robert Gérald Boulet, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (born 1 March 1946 in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC; died 18 July 1990 in Longueuil, QC).

Robert Charlebois. Singer, actor, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, b Montreal 25 Jun 1944. After studying piano for six years and acting 1962-5 at the National Theatre School in Montreal, Robert Charlebois divided his early career between music and theatre.

(William) Allan Burt. Baritone, b Toronto 11 Aug 1897, d there 6 Sep 1957. After study with Edward Broome in Toronto, he won a scholarship to work with Vladimir Rosing in the Opera Department of the ESM.

(Paul) Claude Corbeil. Lyric bass, b Rimouski, Que, 17 Apr 1940; premier prix (CMM) 1958. He studied 1955-8 at the CMM under Dina Maria Narici and Ruzena Herlinger, and at 18 made his debut as Schaunard in La Bohème with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wilfrid Pelletier.

AGLAÉ (b Jocelyne Deslongchamps). Singer, actress, b L'Épiphanie, near Montreal, 13 May 1933, d Montreal 19 Apr 1984. She began her career at 16 in Montreal nightclubs (eg, the Au Faisan doré) under the name Josette France.

He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1991 as the King of Crete in Idomeneo by Mozart.

Chorale de l'Université de Moncton 1963-87 (Chorale de l'Université Saint-Joseph, 1946-63). Male choir founded by Father Léandre Brault in 1946 in Memramcook, NB, with the aim of developing interest in Gregorian chant.

Canadian Country Music Association (Academy of Country Music Entertainment 1976-86). It was preceded by the 'Canadian Academy for Country Music Advancement' initiated in 1975 in Toronto by RPM magazine at the first Big Country Awards.

Félix Leclerc and Raymond Lévesque were the originators of this new species and of the movement it generated, though some historians point to La Bolduc and even Rolland (Le Soldat) Lebrun as its predecessors.

Barbara Cass-Beggs (b Cass, m Beggs). Teacher, folksong collector, singer, b Nottingham, England, 10 Nov 1904, d Ottawa 13 Sep 1990; ARCM 1927, LRAM 1928. She studied voice, piano, pedagogy, and composition at the RCM, where her teachers were Basil Allchin, Percy Buck, C.C.

Alicia Birkett. Teacher, soprano, b England, d Consett, County Durham, England, 31 Oct 1965.

CANO. Franco-Ontarian folk-pop collective, active 1975-85. The founding musicians were members of the Coopérative des artistes du Nouvel Ontario (CANO), an agricultural and artistic commune established in Sudbury in 1970.

Cantata Singers of Ottawa. Mixed 45-voice choir founded in 1964 by conductor Gerald Wheeler. Brian Law succeeded Wheeler in 1965 and gradually increased the choir's membership from its original 16.

Renée Claude (b Bélanger). Singer, stage actress, b Montreal 3 Jul 1939. Renée Claude studied piano at the École Vincent-d'Indy and took singing lessons with Alphonse Ledoux. In 1955 she won first prize in the program "Découvertes de Billy Munro" on CKVL (Verdun).

René Simard, singer, performer and TV host (b at Chicoutimi 28 Feb 1961). Born into a large family, he was taken on by impresario Guy Cloutier at the tender age of ten. His first recording, L'oiseau, had phenomenal success that propelled him on stage at the PLACE DES ARTS and led to tours in Québec.

Joni Mitchell, singer, songwriter, guitarist, painter (b at Fort Macleod, Alta 7 Nov 1943). Born Roberta Joan Anderson, Joni Mitchell, as she later called herself, gravitated towards music from an early age.

Amos Garrett. Guitarist, singer, trombonist, b Detroit 26 Nov 1941. He was taken at five to Toronto, where he studied trombone at the RCMT, and then at 12 to Montreal, where he began playing guitar.
