Maurice Lacasse Morenoff, dancer, teacher, choreographer (b at Montréal 2 Feb 1906; d there 23 Jan 1993) From the age of six, Maurice took lessons at the social DANCE studio, which his father, Adélard Lacasse, had opened in the city's east end in 1895.

Peggy Baker danced with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company in New York (1981-88) and became one of its most acclaimed performers, latterly assisting Lubovitch as rehearsal director.

Graeme Gibson, CM, writer, cultural activist, teacher (born 9 August 1934 in London, ON; died 18 September 2019 in London, England). Graeme Gibson was a noted Canadian author and conservationist. His novels Five Legs (1969), Communion (1971), Perpetual Motion (1982) and Gentleman Death (1993) were widely acclaimed. He also published the environmentally conscious The Bedside Book of Birds (2005) and The Bedside Book of Beasts (2009). A committed bird watcher, he helped found the Pelee Island Bird Observatory. He was also instrumental in forming the Writers’ Union of Canada, the Book and Periodical Development Council and the Writers’ Trust of Canada. He was a former president of PEN Canada and the longtime partner of Margaret Atwood.

Michael Crummey, poet, short story writer, novelist (born at Buchans, NL 18 November 1965). Following a childhood in Buchans, Nfld, and Wabush, Labrador, Michael Crummey graduated from MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND in 1987 with a BA in English.

Denis Bernard, actor and director (b at Lac-Etchemin, Québec 6 Dec 1957- ). First appearing on stage in Québec City in the 1980s, Denis Bernard then made a name for himself in Montréal theatre circles and on television, where he appears regularly.

Gérald Desmarais. Bass, choirmaster, b Montreal 30 Mar 1906, d Hardwick, Vt, 29 Jul 1950. He studied singing and theory with Alfred Lamoureux, Paul Doyon, and Alfred La Liberté, and received a scholarship in 1927 from the Delphic Study Club.

Ludger Duvernay, newspaperman, editor, printer, politician, Patriote (born 22 January 1799 in Verchères, Lower Canada; died 28 November 1852 in Montréal, Canada East).

Stanley Louis Dragland, literary critic, editor, novelist, poet (b Calgary, AB 2 Dec 1942). Born and raised in Calgary, Stan Dragland studied at the University of Alberta, where he received a BA and MA. He earned a PhD from Queen's University in 1970.

(Joseph Ernest) Auguste Descarries. Pianist, organist, teacher, composer, b Lachine, near Montreal, 26 Nov 1896, d there 4 Mar 1958; laureat (AMQ), D MUS (Montreal) 1949.

G. Herald Keefer. Organist, organ builder, composer, b Vancouver 12 Apr 1919; honorary PH D (Somerset, England) 1985. He received his early choir training in Vancouver under Frederick Robinson.

Yanna McIntosh (born 1970 in Jamaica). McIntosh is one of Canada's pre-eminent stage actors, known for her dramatic range and fiery intensity. She has also had an active career in television.

Douglas Lochhead, poet, librarian (born at Guelph, ON 25 March 1922; died at Sackville, NB 15 March 2011). Born in Guelph, Ontario, Douglas Lochhead was raised in Ottawa and took his BA at MCGILL UNIVERSITY in 1943.

Gilbert Patenaude. Conductor, composer, b Montreal 30 Apr 1947; BA (Montreal) 1966. Following piano and organ studies at the École Vincent-d'Indy, he studied voice with Pierre Mollet, orchestral conducting with Rémus Tzincoca and analysis with Gilles Tremblay at the CMM.

Damase Potvin, journalist, writer (b at Bagotville, Qué 16 Oct 1879; d at Québec C 9 June 1964). After studies at the Petit Séminaire de Chicoutimi in 1903, Potvin entered the novitiate of the White Fathers of Africa in Algiers.

August Werner Schellenberg, actor (born 25 July 1936 in Montréal, QC; died 15 August 2013 in Dallas, TX).

Her first important Canadian role was in Michel BRAULT's Entre la mer et l'eau douce (1967), and she also starred in Kamouraska (1973) by Claude JUTRA.
