Sarah Margaret Armour Robertson, painter (b at Montréal 16 June 1891; d there 6 Dec 1948). She was a member of the group of women painters who studied with William BRYMNER, Maurice CULLEN and Randolph Hewton, and she joined the Beaver Hall Hill group and later the Canadian Group of Painters.

Avril Ramona Lavigne, singer, songwriter (b at Belleville, Ont 27 Sept 1984). Avril Lavigne began singing gospel music in church as a child, then went on to belt out country songs at music festivals and talent contests before she was discovered by Arista Records.

Martine Saint-Clair. Singer, lyricist, b Montreal 22 Jul 1964. She gave her first shows while in school, at 15, singing songs by Gino Vanelli and Jean-Pierre Ferland, her sister providing the piano accompaniment.

Jean Leclerc (a.k.a. Jean Leloup), singer-songwriter, novelist (born 14 May 1961 in Québec City, Québec). Leloup’s talent and genius first made him a hit with young francophones in the 1990s, and ever since, he has continued to develop his art and captivate French-speaking audiences. Regarded as an anticonformist artist, he has projected an eccentric persona and gone by many names, such as John the Wolf, Johnny Guitare, Roi Ponpon and Dead Wolf. But despite his extravagance, Leloup has proven an authentic, complex individual.

Edward Roper, painter, illustrator, amateur naturalist (b in Kent, Eng 1854; d 1891). He made several visits to N America and spent several months in BC in 1887 and the Yukon around 1890 making careful pencil and watercolour

Alexander Ross, fur trader, author (b in Morayshire, Scot 9 May 1783; d at Red River [Man] 23 Oct 1856).

James Sinclair Ross, writer (b at Shellbrook, Sask 22 Jan 1908; d at Vancouver, BC 29 Feb 1996). Ross was one of Canada's most respected writers, in particular for his acclaimed novel, As for me and my House.

Sapp is widely regarded as one of Canada's foremost Indigenous painters. Sapp's success as a painter in the realist tradition (associated more with European art) made him a pioneer of the new Indigenous arts.

Horace Llewellyn Seymour, urban planner (b at Burford, Ont 1882; d at Ottawa 21 Apr 1940). One of the founders of modern Canadian URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING, Seymour was a leading exponent of the scientific approach to planning and of zoning as the best means of achieving efficient cities.

Sandwell has been characterized by Robert Fulford, a later editor of the same journal, as "progressive but not too progressive, tolerant but not too tolerant."

Harry (Reginald Thomas Broughton) Thomas. Pianist, composer, b Bristol, 24 Mar 1890, d Montreal 11 Jul 1941. A self-taught musician with a talent for improvisation, Thomas moved to Montreal in 1909 and played for silent films at local theatres, including the Regent, until ca 1920.

Charles Sangster, editor, poet (b at Kingston, UC 16 July 1822; d there 9 Dec 1893). Sangster's first job was with the Ordnance in Kingston. Simultaneously he held a position with the local British Whig.

Aiko Suzuki, fibre artist (b at Vancouver 1937; d there 31 Dec 2005). Although not a weaver or tapestry designer in the traditional sense, she was one of a number of Canadian artists who have used fibres and textile techniques as a medium for expressing abstract concepts.

Edward Sapir, anthropologist, linguist, essayist (born 26 January 1884 in Lauenburg, Germany; died 4 February 1939 in New Haven, Connecticut).

Keenberg, while remaining engaged in a great number of interesting projects, completed a M Arch from the University of Manitoba in 1989.

(Douglas) Ernest Adams. Baritone, administrator, b Winnipeg 17 Dec 1920, d King City, Ont, 23 Jan 2011. Raised in Vancouver, Adams sang there as a boy soprano and later studied voice with Isabelle Burnada.

Robin Skelton, poet, critic, publisher, artist, educator (b at Easington, East Yorkshire, Eng 12 Oct 1925; d at Victoria, BC 22 Aug 1997).
