James Kenneth Campbell, clarinetist, wind soloist, teacher (b at Leduc, Alta 10 Aug 1949). A graduate of University of Toronto (B. Mus 1971), Campbell was a member of the Hamilton Philharmonic (1967-69) and the NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA (1966-69).

Very quickly, her extraordinary voice and her simplicity conquered the province of Quebec, and her career experienced a meteoric rise. In 1982, she took part in the Tokyo Song Festival with 'Tellement j'ai d'amour pour toi,' and won the musicians' prize as well as a gold medal.

Joseph-Alphonse Ouimet, engineer, CBC president (b at Montréal 12 June 1908; d there 20 Dec 1988). Educated at Université de Montréal and McGill, Ouimet worked for a firm developing television and built a prototype TV receiver in 1932.

Moses Henry Perley, lawyer, naturalist, author (b at Maugerville, NB 31 Dec 1804; d off Labrador coast 17 Aug 1862). An avid sportsman and natural historian, Perley became the leading authority on NB's resources in the mid-19th century.

Albert Frank Moritz, poet, professor (b 15 Apr 1947 at Niles, Ohio, US). A.F. Moritz attended Marquette University (Wisconsin), where he earned a BA in journalism and a MA and PhD in English literature. Since 1974 he has lived in Toronto, where he is a professor at the University of Toronto.

John Cresswell Parkin, architect (b to Canadian parents at Sheffield, Eng 24 Mar 1922, d at Toronto, Ont 22 Nov 1988). After graduating in architecture from U of Man and studies at Harvard under Walter Gropius, Parkin joined John B. PARKIN (no relation) in 1947.

John Andrew Pearson, architect (b at Chesterfield, Eng 22 June 1867; d at Toronto 11 June 1940). Pearson, in partnership with Frank Darling, built up one of the most successful architectural practices in Canada. Trained at

Jean Papineau-Couture, composer, educator, administrator (b at Montréal 12 Nov 1916, d there 11 Aug 2000), grandson of the composer Guillaume COUTURE.

Ostell's architectural training remains unclear, but soon after he arrived in Montréal in 1834 he received his "brevet de cléricature," having apprenticed to André Trudeau, arpenteur, in order to learn land surveying in Québec (which was different from the British practice).

Léo-Ernest Ouimet, director, producer, distributor, exhibitor (b at St-Martin, Qué 16 Mar 1877; d at Montréal 2 Mar 1972). Ouimet, one of the most important men in the history of Canadian cinema, was a true innovator.

Douglas Shadbolt, architect, teacher (b at Victoria, BC 18 Apr 1925; d Vancouver, BC 8 May 2002). Educated at Victoria College, the University of British Columbia and McGill University, Shadbolt finished his architectural studies at the University of Oregon between 1955 and 1957.

Clem Martini, playwright (born at Calgary 25 Aug 1956). Clem Martini grew up in Bowness, Alta. As a child he loved animals, the outdoors and reading. In high school he began writing short fiction and won several awards and contests, including the Woolworths Competition, for his stories.

Betty Oliphant, ballet teacher (b at London, Eng 5 Aug 1918; d at St. Catharines, Ont 12 July 2004).

In 1981, having followed Le Groupe to Ottawa, he resigned the co-directorship and returned to Montréal as an independent choreographer and teacher.

Edward Alexander Partridge, farmer, farm leader, author (b at Whites' Corners [Dalston] near Barrie, Canada W 5 Nov 1862; d at Victoria 3 Aug 1931). Partridge grew up in an area where farm militancy was well established in the 1870s.

Leonard Byron Peterson, playwright (born at Regina, Sask 15 Mar 1917, died at Toronto 28 Feb 2008). Len Peterson grew up in Regina, spending his high school years at Scott Collegiate and then attending Regina's Luther College until 1936, in its arts program.

 Phillips soon became friends with another expatriate Englishman, Cyril H. Barraud, who in 1915 imparted to Phillips a love for the technical craft of printmaking, and etching in particular. Upon Barraud's enlistment in the Canadian army, Philllips purchased his printing press and equipment.

Lorne Albert Pierce, publisher, editor, writer (b at Delta, Ont 3 Aug 1890: d at Toronto 27 Nov 1961). Editor in chief of RYERSON PRESS 1922-60, Pierce championed Canadian writers and writing for over 40 years.
