Edwin Gledhill. Composer, teacher, b London 3 Jul 1830, d California Feb 1919. He arrived in New York in 1851 with his father, Robert L. Gledhill, who under the name Signor Salvi appeared as tenor soloist on Jenny Lind's North-American tours of 1851-2.

Walter E. Harris, OC, Gitxsan artist and hereditary chief (born 10 June 1931 in Kispiox, BC; died 12 January 2009). Harris developed the “’Ksan style of Northwest Coast Art” based on Gitxsan culture and history.

Pitseolak Ashoona, CM, artist (born between 1904 and 1908 on Nottingham Island (Tujajuak), NWT; died 28 May 1983 in Cape Dorset, NWT). Among the first generation of Inuit printmakers, Pitseolak Ashoona was born en route from Nunavik in arctic Québec to the south coast of Baffin Island (Qikagtaaluk). She is known for her lively prints and drawings, which show "the things we did long ago before there were many white men" and for her imaginative renderings of spirits and monsters.

Michael Robinson, artist (b at Timmins, Ont 27 Mar 1948). A self-taught artist with a lyrical and surreal style, Robinson is noted for his ink drawings and etchings. His concerns are the conservation of natural resources and revitalization of Indigenous cultural values.

Frances Elaine Keillor, CM, pianist, musicologist, teacher (born 2 September 1939 in London, ON). As a concert pianist in the 1950s and 1960s, Elaine Keillor became known for performing and promoting music written by Canadian composers, particularly women. She then became the first woman to earn a doctorate in musicology from the University of Toronto, specializing in ethnomusicology. She taught for many years at Carleton University, where she was responsible for the Canadian music program and the school’s first courses on the music of Indigenous peoples. She was a prolific contributor to the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada and served on the editorial board of the Journal of the Canadian Folk Music Society. She was also a representative for the Canadian University Music Society, chair of the Canadian Musical Heritage Society and a representative of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

James Archibald Houston, artist, author, filmmaker (b at Toronto 12 Jun 1921; d at New London, Conn 17 Apr 2005). Houston studied art in Toronto at the Ontario College of Art before serving in WWII.

William Burke Wood, actor-manager (b at Montréal 26 May 1779; d at Philadelphia, Pa 23 Sept 1861). He was the first native-born N American to achieve notable success in the theatre; Wood's parents had immigrated to Canada before the American Revolution and returned to NY c 1784.

Adam Reuben Beach, actor, advocate, motivational speaker (born 11 November 1972 in Ashern, MB). Saulteaux actor Adam Beach is one of Canada’s most successful actors of Indigenous descent. After co-starring in Bruce McDonald’s Dance Me Outside (1994) and the American indie hit Smoke Signals (1998), he gave acclaimed lead performances in John Woo’s Windtalkers (2002), Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers (2006) and the HBO TV movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007). He also starred in such Canadian TV series as The Rez (1996–97), Moose TV (2007) and Arctic Air (2012–14). He is a motivational speaker and an outspoken advocate for Indigenous peoples’ rights. In 2012, he founded the Adam Beach Film Institute, a film school in Winnipeg for Indigenous Youth.

Anthony De Sa, writer, teacher (b at Toronto, Ont). Anthony De Sa grew up in the Portugese community of Toronto, Ontario. He attended the University of Toronto and later completed post-graduate work at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

MacLeod's first produced work was the libretto for a chamber opera, The Secret Garden, presented by Comus Theatre in Toronto in 1985; it won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for best new musical in 1986.

Bengt Hambraeus, composer, organist, musicologist (b at Stockholm, Sweden 29 Jan 1928; d at Apple Hill, Ont 21 Sept 2000).

Torquil: A Scandinavian Dramatic Legend. Opera by Charles A.E. Harriss on a text by Edward Oxenford. This two-and-a-half-hour work (which, the composer stipulates on the score, 'may be sung by Choral Societies but must be given without Costume or Action') was published in 1896 by Whaley Royce.

Jean O'Neil, author (b at Sherbrooke, Qc 1936). He received a BA from the university in that city in 1957, and began a career as journalist in Granby, Chicoutimi, Québec City and Montréal.

David Gardner, actor, director, educator (born 4 May 1928 in Toronto, ON; died 8 February 2020 in Toronto). David Gardner was a theatre professional who brought a passion for Canadian drama to performance, education and political forums. He had a long and distinguished career as an actor, director, teacher and historian, and was a major player in the development of Canadian theatre. He played some 800 roles on stage, radio, film and television and directed for both stage and television. He taught at the University of Toronto and at York University. His work has been published widely in Canadian encyclopedias and journals.
