Charles William Gordon, pen name Ralph Connor, clergyman, novelist (b in Glengarry Cy, Canada W 13 Sept 1860; d at Winnipeg 31 Oct 1937). The most successful Canadian novelist in the early 20th century, Gordon used literature as a pulpit to preach his energetic branch of "red-blooded Christianity.

Although he was one of the first Canadian painters to portray nude figures, as in his A Venetian Bather (1889), these works were pale compared to those of Degas or Renoir.

Victoria (Prudença Victorine) Cartier. Pianist, organist, teacher, b Sorel, Que, 4 Apr 1867, d Montreal 1 Jan 1955. She was a niece of Sir George-Étienne Cartier.

Jacques Faubert. Composer, teacher, orchestra and choir conductor, b Valleyfield, Que, 30 May 1952; premiers prix harmony, counterpoint (CMM).1974, premier prix fugue (CMM) 1976, premier prix fugue (Cons of Paris) 1978, premier prix analysis (Cons of Paris) 1979.

(Marie Thérèse) Ginette Ravel, (b Gravel). Singer, lyricist, b Joliette, Que, 6 Oct 1940. She studied elocution with Mme Jean-Louis Audet and began her singing career in 1959 at the cabaret La Cave in Montreal.

Jean-Noël Charbonneau. Teacher, choirmaster, Gregorianist, b Montreal 5 Jun 1875, d there 26 Jan 1945; D MUS (Montreal) 1932. He took his classical education at Ste-Thérèse and continued his musical studies in Montreal under Guillaume Couture and Achille Fortier.

Jan (Garrit) Overduin. Organist, b Franeker, Holland, 12 May 1943, naturalized Canadian 1962; ARCT 1961, FRCCO 1963, BA (U Western Ont) 1964, FTCL 1966, Associate American Guild of Organists 1967, MA (Waterloo) 1969, M MUS (U Western Ont) 1979.

Rufus Guinchard. Fiddler, accordionist, composer, b Daniel's Harbour, Nfld, 6 Sep 1899, d Corner Brook, Nfld, 7 Sep 1990. He began playing violin at 11, holding the bow in the middle, and laying the instrument across his chest and against his right shoulder.

Louis Dulongpré. Painter, teacher of music and dancing, stage manager, topographer, b probably in Paris, 16 Apr 1759, d St-Hyacinthe, Lower Canada (Quebec), 26 Apr 1843. He came to North America on a French troopship during the American War of Independence.

   Aaron Allan Edson, landscape painter (b at Standbridge, Qué 18 Dec 1846; d at Glen-Sutton, Qué 1 May 1888). His first teacher (around 1863) was likely Robert Duncanson, an American artist living in Montréal. He later studied in London, England.

Jean (Antoine Joseph) Goulet. Violinist, conductor, teacher, b Liège 17 Apr 1877, naturalized Canadian 1919, d Montreal 23 Sep 1965. He studied violin at the Liège Conservatoire and, while working as a printer, was a member of that city's opera orchestra.

Gregory Clark, newspaperman, soldier, outdoorsman, humorist (b at Toronto 25 Sept 1892; d there 3 Feb 1977). Greg Clark attended Harbord Collegiate, followed by a year at the University of Toronto, after which he began his career with the Toronto Star. He worked for the Star from 1911 to 1947.

Nattiez has been Professor of Musicology at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Music since 1972. Since 1973 he has given countless lectures in over 20 countries on a wide variety of subjects.

Deanna Durbin, born Edna Mae Durbin, actress, singer (born at Winnipeg 4 Dec 1921, died April 2013). Deanna Durbin was born in Winnipeg to English immigrant parents, but was raised from infancy in California. She was blessed with a strong and surprisingly mature voice.

Margaret Ruth Kidder, actor (born 17 October 1948 in Yellowknife, NWT 17; died 13 May 2018 in Livingston, Montana). Margot Kidder's family moved frequently when she was a child, due to her father's work as a mining engineer. Finally she was placed in a boarding school, Magee Secondary in Vancouver, to complete her education.

John Arthur Fraser, artist, illustrator, teacher (b at London, Eng 9 Jan 1838; d at New York C, NY 1 Jan 1898). Soon after emigrating from England in 1858, Fraser joined the firm of William NOTMAN in Montréal as a tinter

Fred Cogswell, poet, editor, translator (b at East Centreville, NB 8 Nov 1917; d at Vancouver, BC, 20 June 2004). In 1952 Cogswell joined the English department at the University of New Brunswick, where he had been educated, and remained there 3 decades.

Jean Papineau-Couture. Composer, educator, administrator, b Montreal 12 Nov 1916, d there 11 Aug 2000; B MUS (New England Conservatory) 1941, honorary D MUS (Chicago Conservatory College) 1960, honorary LLD (Saskatchewan) 1967. He was a grandson of Guillaume Couture and Mercédès Papineau.

Grossman began folk dancing in grade school and, by 1960, was studying and performing modern dance with Gloria Unti. In 1963, at a summer course at Connecticut College, he met Paul Taylor, who invited him to join his company in New York City.
