John Paris Bickell, mining executive (b at Molesworth, Ont 26 Sept 1884; d at New York City, NY 22 Aug 1951). A Toronto broker, Bickell invested in a Porcupine gold property that formed the basis of McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd, of which he was president and later chairman.

Johnny Burke, poet, playwright, songwriter (b at St John's 1851; d there Aug 1930). While working at a variety of jobs, Burke moonlighted as a poet, writing hundreds of broadsheet ballads about events in St John's, printing them on his own press and selling them for 2 to 5 cents a copy.

Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, army officer, governor general (b at London, Eng 10 Dec 1891; d at Slough, Eng 16 June 1969). The last British governor general of Canada (1946-52) was born into the Irish aristocracy.

Charles Tory Bruce, poet, novelist (b at Port Shoreham, NS 11 May 1906; d at Toronto 19 Dec 1971). Bruce graduated from Mount Allison University in 1927, worked for 8 months as a reporter for the Halifax Chronicle, and then joined the Canadian Press.

John Herbert Brundage, pen name John Herbert, writer and theatre director (b at Toronto 13 Oct 1926, d at Toronto 22 June 2001).

In 1940 when the CANADIAN CONGRESS OF LABOUR (CCL) was founded, he became its vice-president and the next year its full-time secretary-treasurer. In 1949 he helped found the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.

Douglas Scott Harkness, teacher, farmer, politician (b at Toronto 29 Mar 1903; d at Calgary 2 May 1999). A schoolteacher, farmer and war hero, Harkness was first elected to the House of Commons for Calgary East in 1945; he subsequently represented Calgary North and Calgary Centre.

Pauline Donalda, stage name of Pauline Lightstone, soprano, teacher, administrator (b at Montréal 5 Mar 1882; d there 22 Oct 1970). Known for her contribution to lyrical art in Montréal, she was a pupil of Clara Lichtenstein and travelled to Paris on a grant from arts patron Lord STRATHCONA.

Henry Birks, silversmith, founder of Henry Birks and Sons (b at Montréal 30 Nov 1840; d there 16 Apr 1928). He graduated from Montreal High School in 1856 and spent the next winter perfecting his French. In April 1857 he joined Savage and Lyman, a large firm of watchmakers and jewellers.

Leonard Walter Brockington, first chairman of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (b at Cardiff, Wales 6 Apr 1888; d at Toronto 15 Sept 1966).

André Bureau, communications administrator (b at Trois-Rivières, Qué 10 Oct 1935). Bureau was trained in law at Université Laval and at Paris's Université de Droit Comparé.

Guy Gavriel Kay, writer (b at Weyburn, Sask 7 Nov 1954). Growing up in Winnipeg, Guy Gavriel Kay's first introduction to fantasy literature came from his childhood reading of fairy tales and Greek mythology.

Trivedi Vidhya Nandan Persaud, anatomist (b at Pt Mourant, Guyana 19 Feb 1940). Educated at Rostock, E Ger (MD 1965, DSc 1974), and U of W Indies, Kingston, Jamaica (PhD 1970), Persaud has received international acclaim for his research in embryology, teratology and pathology.

Charles Burchill Lynch journalist, author (b Cambridge, Mass 3 Dec 1919; d at Ottawa 21 July 1994). Lynch came to Canada at the age of 2 weeks and was educated at Saint John, NB. At 17 he began his newspaper career as a reporter with the Saint John Citizen.
