Wilfrid Gagnon, businessman (b at Montréal 15 Sept 1898; d there 10 June 1963). A graduate of Montréal's Collège Sainte-Marie, Gagnon joined his family's shoe-manufacturing firm, Aird and Son Ltd, becoming president in 1926.

Eugene Rathbone Fairweather, theologian, ecumenist (b at Ottawa 2 Nov 1920). An ordained priest of the Anglican Church of Canada, Fairweather was a member of the theological faculty of Trinity College, University of Toronto, from 1944 until his retirement in 1986. He was dean of divinity 1983-85.

Sorel Etrog, CM, artist, writer, philosopher (born 29 August 1933 in Laşi, Romania; died 26 February 2014 in Toronto, Ontario). For more than half a century, Sorel Etrog was one of Canada’s most renowned contemporary sculptors.

Jean Éthier-Blais, professor, writer, literary critic (b at Sturgeon Falls, Ont 15 Nov 1925). Professor of French literature at McGill since 1962, Éthier-Blais regularly contributed literary criticism to Le Devoir from 1961. Some of these articles were published in Signets (3 vols, 1967, 1973).

Donald Farquharson, politician, premier of PEI (b at Mermaid, PEI 27 July 1834; d at Charlottetown 26 June 1903). A teacher by training, Farquharson subsequently entered the wholesale and shipping business and in 1876 won election to the PEI Assembly as a Liberal.

Jacob Lewis Englehart, industrialist (b at Cleveland, Ohio 2 Nov 1847; d at Toronto 6 Apr 1921). In 1869, at age 19, he established Englehart and Co, one of the most successful producers in the Petrolia, Ont, fields, where the world's first commercial oil production had begun in 1857.

Joao Alvares Fagundes, explorer (fl 1521). In 1520 he explored the coast south and west of Cape Race, Nfld, and perhaps entered the St Lawrence River. He may have sighted Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Cape Breton Island and Sable Island.

James Endicott, missionary, clergyman (b in Devonshire, Eng 8 May 1865; d at Toronto 9 Mar 1954). Coming to Canada at age 17, he served Methodist home missions until he returned to school at Wesley College, Winnipeg, and was ordained in 1893.

Henry Robert Emmerson, lawyer, businessman, premier of New Brunswick (b at Maugerville, NB 25 Sept 1853; d at Dorchester, NB 9 July 1914).

Robert Charles Davidson, Haida artist (b at Hydaburg, Alaska 4 Nov 1946). Master carver, printmaker and jeweller, Robert Davidson is great-grandson and heir to the legacy of Charlie Edenshaw.

Petrowska Quilico gave recitals in Canada, the US, Europe, and the Middle East. In 1971, at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York, she played works of Gilles Tremblay, Stockhausen, and others. In 1973 at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris she performed Serge Garant's Pièce No.

Eloul's characteristic monumental sculptures grace the public spaces of many Canadian cities. His gleaming rectangles of highly polished aluminum or stainless steel are balanced precariously at unusual angles, testing and probing the laws of gravity.

Clarence Gagnon, engraver, painter (b at Montréal 8 Nov 1881; d there 5 Jan 1942). After studying at the École normale du Plateau in Montréal, he received his artistic training from the painter William BRYMNER at the Art Association of Montreal 1897-1900.

Christopher John Raymond Garrett, physical oceanographer (b at Bude, Eng 30 July 1943). Educated at Cambridge, he joined the department of oceanography at Dalhousie University in 1971. Known for his early work with W.H.

Ezra Butler Eddy, manufacturer (b near Bristol, Vt 22 Aug 1827; d at Hull, Qué 12 Feb 1906).

William Cameron Edwards, industrialist, politician (b in Clarence Twp, Russell County, Canada W 7 May 1844; d at Ottawa 17 Sept 1921). Edwards entered the lumbering business in Thurso but moved to Rockland in 1868 and founded W.C.

Gisela Depkat. Cellist, teacher, b Königsberg, Germany, 5 Sep 1942, naturalized Canadian 1960. Her parents settled in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) in 1954. After studies with A.

Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau, poet (b at Montréal 13 June 1912; d at Ste-Catherine-de-Fossambault, Qué 24 Oct 1943). Saint-Denys Garneau's writing marks a turning point in the history of Québec poetry.

Frederick Goldwin Gardiner, lawyer, politician (b at Toronto 21 Jan 1895; d there 22 Aug 1983). A law graduate of Osgoode Hall (1920), Gardiner began his political career in 1936 as deputy reeve of Forest Hill, a suburban village in north Toronto.
