Jacques Israelievitch, CM, violinist, violist, conductor, teacher (born 6 May 1948 in Cannes, France; died 5 September 2015 in Toronto, Ontario). Violinist Jacques Israelievitch was renowned internationally for his versatility, sensitivity and virtuosic technical ability. After studying in Paris and playing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the St. Louis Symphony, Israelievitch became the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s longest-serving concertmaster (1998 to 2008). A supporter of contemporary music and Canadian composers, he made more than 100 recordings and performed often with noted orchestras and in chamber ensembles worldwide. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada and an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in France.

Robert Charlebois. Singer, actor, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, b Montreal 25 Jun 1944. After studying piano for six years and acting 1962-5 at the National Theatre School in Montreal, Robert Charlebois divided his early career between music and theatre.

Jacqueline Martel. Soprano, b Quebec City 6 Aug 1940. She began piano studies in 1946 at the Mallet convent in Quebec City and continued in 1952 at the CMQ. In 1955 she began voice lessons there with Ria Lenssens.

Charles Labelle. Choirmaster, composer, conductor, teacher, b Champlain, NY, 15 Aug 1849, d Montreal 21 May 1903. He studied at the Collège de Montréal, where, at 12, he was put in charge of the solfège class and was also the school organist. He became a lawyer in 1873.

Stephen (Charles) Willis. Archivist, musicologist, b Collingwood, Ont, 17 Dec 1946, d Ottawa 11 Sep 1994; AWCM piano 1965, BA (Western) 1969, MA (Columbia) 1971, M PHIL (Columbia) 1974, PH D (Columbia) 1975.

First shown at the Carmen Lamana Gallery in Toronto in the early 1970s, his early sculpture took the influences of Minimalism and Conceptualism in a new direction for Canadian art.

William George (Billy) Barker, VC, fighter pilot, war hero, businessman (born 3 November 1894 in Dauphin, MB; died 12 March 1930 in Ottawa, ON). One of Canada’s foremost First World War flying aces, Barker is, to date, the most highly decorated military serviceman in Canadian history.

Joseph Lewis, alias Levi Johnston, also Lewes and Louis, fur trader (born c. 1772–73 in Manchester, New Hampshire; died 1820 in Saskatchewan District). Joseph Lewis was a Black fur trader, originally from the United States, who participated in the fur industry’s early expansion into the Canadian Northwest in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is one of very few Black people involved in the fur trade whose name was documented in existing texts. Joseph Lewis is further notable for being the first Black person in present-day Saskatchewan, as well as, in all likelihood, Alberta.

Philippe (Georges) Bruneau. Accordionist, composer, b Montreal 22 Sep 1934, d Forcalquier, France 7 Aug 2011. Bruneau's father was an amateur accordionist. Bruneau took up the instrument at 15 and joined a folk music ensemble at the Trinidad Ballroom in Montreal at 19.

Monique Leyrac (b Tremblay). Singer, actress, b Montreal 26 Feb 1928. She studied drama with Jeanne Maubourg and in 1943 took the role of Bernadette in Franz Werfel's Le Chant de Bernadette on radio station CKAC's 'Radio-théâtre Lux'.

Michael Hollingsworth had his first play, Strawberry Fields, produced by the Factory Theatre Lab in 1972. His next, performed at Toronto Free Theatre the following year, was Clear Light. In this LSD-inspired play, 2 couples and 1 ex-husband gather for a game of cards.

Jacques Alfred Dextraze, "Ja Dex," soldier (b at Montréal 15 Aug 1919; d at Ottawa 10 May 1993). He served during WWII in Iceland, England, France, Germany and the Netherlands and was promoted from private to lt-col commanding the Fusiliers Mount-Royal.

Henri Beau, painter (b at Montréal 27 June 1863; d at Paris, France 15 May 1949). After his first design and painting lessons in Montréal, he left for the US in 1884, ending up in San Francisco where he did coloured engravings.

Pierre Gautier. Organist, teacher, composer, b Argenton-sur-Creuse, Berry, France, 29 Oct 1863, d Eastview (now Vanier), near Ottawa, 15 Dec 1940. He studied piano, organ, and harmony in his native city, then in Paris at the Institut national des jeunes aveugles.

J.J. (Joseph Jean) Johannesen. Administrator, businessman, b Vitry, France, 23 Mar 1928, naturalized Canadian 1976, d Victoria 14 Mar 1994. Educated in Belgium, where he joined the JM movement upon its foundation, Johannesen was interested in composing but pursued a career in business.

Georges Dufaux, cinematographer, director (b at Lille, France 17 March 1927, d at Switzerland, 10 Nov 2008). After graduating in 1953 from the École nationale de photographie et de cinématographie in Paris, Dufaux worked at a film laboratory in Brazil for three years.

Robin Collyer has exhibited his sculpture and photography across Canada and the United States, and in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England and France. In 1987 he exhibited at Documenta 8 in Kassel, Germany, and in 1993 his work represented Canada at the Venice Biennale.
