Richard George McConnell, geologist, explorer (b at Chatham, Canada E 26 Mar 1857; d at Ottawa 1 Apr 1942). In 1879 he graduated from McGill and began working for the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CANADA in Québec.

He served as chief engineer of the Montréal Water Board and designed the water-supply system for Hamilton, Ont (1859), as well as the waterworks in Ottawa (1874). His Hamilton Pumping Station, with its working Gartshore beam engines, has been declared a national historic site.

Keith Leon Moore, anatomist (b at Brantford, Ont 5 Oct 1925). Educated at Western (PhD, 1954), he joined the staff at U of Man in 1956.

Robert Tait McKenzie, educator, sculptor, orthopedic surgeon, author (b at Almonte, Canada W 26 May 1867; d at Philadelphia, Pa 28 Apr 1938). He was a student at McGill 1885-92, and became well known for rehabilitative methods he developed as a medical officer during WWI.

Sir John Cunningham McLennan, KBE, FRS, FRSC, physicist (born 14 April 1867 in Ingersoll, ON; died 9 October 1935 in Paris, France).

William Archibald Mackintosh, (b in Madoc, Ont 21 May 1895; d at Kingston, Ont 29 Dec 1970). He attended Queen's (BA) and Harvard (MA and PhD). At Queen's he came under the influence of O.D. SKELTON, particularly his historical approach to economics and his interest in public affairs.

Erich Baer, chemist, educator (b at Berlin, Ger 8 Mar 1901; d at Toronto 23 Sept 1975). He studied at University of Berlin under Hermann O.L. Fischer, with whom he worked until 1948 (from 1937 at University of Toronto). Baer became a professor in 1951 and professor emeritus in 1969.

John Seaman Bates, chemist, environmentalist (b at Woodstock, Ont 9 June 1888; d at Sackville, NB 26 Nov 1991). A graduate of Acadia U, in 1914 Bates obtained the first PhD in chemical engineering granted by Columbia U.

John Alexander Douglas McCurdy, aviation pioneer (b at Baddeck, NS 2 Aug 1886; d at Montréal 25 June 1961). With F.W. BALDWIN and A.G. BELL he formed the Aerial Experiment Association to test the feasibility of powered

William Lash Miller, educator, chemist (b at Galt, Ont 10 Sept 1866; d at Toronto 1 Sept 1940). When he died, Miller was described as the greatest chemist Canada had produced; he was certainly the most colourful.

Gordon Murray, surgeon (b at Stratford, Ont 29 May 1894; d at Toronto 7 Jan 1976). Murray's medical training was interrupted in 1917 when he became an artillery man and went overseas to fight at Ypres, the Somme and Vimy Ridge.

Walter Moberly, civil engineer (b at Steeple Aston, Eng 15 Aug 1832; d at Vancouver 14 May 1915). He came to Canada as a child and studied in Canada W, later moving to BC.

Jens Eriksen Munk, navigator, explorer, naval officer (b at Barbo, Norway 3 June 1579; d at Copenhagen, Denmark 3 or 24 June 1628).

Charles A. (Augustus) Sippi. Educator, organist-choirmaster, physician, b Hyderabad, India (Pakistan), 25 Jul 1844, d London, Ont, 15 May 1906; D MED (Dublin), honorary MA (Kenyon College, Ohio). Though of Italian descent Sippi was third-generation Irish.

Timothy Richard Parsons, biological oceanographer (b in Sri Lanka [Ceylon] 1 Nov 1932). He received his doctorate in biochemistry at McGill and worked as a research scientist in Nanaimo, BC, for 11 years, Secretariat of UNESCO, Paris, for 2 years, and professor of oceanography, UBC, 1971 to present.

Frank Russel Thurston, aircraft engineer (b at Chicago, Ill 5 Dec 1914). Thurston's British parents took him at age one to England, where he worked from 1937 at the National Physical Laboratory.

Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell, medical missionary (b at Parkgate, Eng 28 Feb 1865; d at Charlotte, Vt 9 Oct 1940). Grenfell entered the London Medical School in 1883 and 2 years later was converted to active CHRISTIANITY at a tent meeting of American evangelist Dwight L. Moody.

Margaret Newton, plant pathologist (b at Montréal 20 Apr 1887; d at Victoria 6 Apr 1971), sister of Robert NEWTON.

Robert Newton, plant biochemist, university president (b at Montréal 7 Feb 1889; d at Laguna Hills, Calif 22 Nov 1985), brother of Margaret NEWTON. Robert Newton was one of 5 children; all, including 2 girls, became scientists, and all had PhD qualifications.

Kenneth William Neatby, agricultural scientist (b at Sutton, Eng 30 Mar 1900; d at Ottawa 27 Oct 1958), brother of Hilda NEATBY.
