Angelo (McCallum) Read. Teacher, composer, organist, b near St Catharines, Canada West (Ontario), 22 May 1854, d Port Maitland, Ont, 15 Jul 1926. His early musical training took place in St Catharines and in the USA.

Alfie (Alfred) Noakes. Trumpeter, b Toronto 26 Jun 1903, d Christchurch, England, 27 Feb 1982.

Jian Ghomeshi, singer, songwriter, musician, broadcaster, writer, manager (born 9 June 1967 in London, England). Jian Ghomeshi was a member of the quirky, alternative pop-folk group Moxy Früvous from 1990 to 2001. He parlayed that recognition into a radio and television career with the CBC, hosting such entertainment talk shows as >play, The National Playlist and Q. He wrote a best-selling memoir, 1982 (2012), about growing up as an Iranian Canadian in Thornhill, Ontario, and stayed active in the music business as an artist manager. His career and national profile unravelled in the fall of 2014 when he was fired by the CBC and charged with sexual assault in incidents involving several women (see Jian Ghomeshi Case).

Dawes, Andrew (Albert). Violinist, b High River, near Calgary, 7 Feb 1940. He studied violin 1947-57 with Clayton Hare initially in Calgary, commuting to Portland Ore for the last two years, and 1957-60 with Murray Adaskin in Saskatoon.

André (Henri) Durieux. Violinist, conductor, arranger, teacher, b Paris 1899, d Montreal 18 Dec 1951. His family settled in Canada in 1911. He studied at the McGill Cons with Saul Brant and in Chicago with Otakar Ševčík and Leopold Auer.

(Louis) Alphonse Lavallée-Smith. Organist, teacher, composer, b Berthierville, near Trois Rivières, Que, 17 Apr 1873, d Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, north of Montreal, 23 Jul 1912. He was the son of Dr Wenceslas Smith and Zénobie Lavallée (first cousin of Calixa Lavallée).

Anthony Rozankovic. Composer, conductor, pianist, trombonist, born Montreal 22 Jul 1962.

Al (Alexander Peter) Cherny (b Chernywech). Fiddler, b Medicine Hat, Alta, of Ukrainian parents, 1 Nov 1932, d Missisauga, Ont, 23 Aug 1989. As a youth he studied violin with Frank Nowak and in his teens he played country music on CHAT radio, Medicine Hat.

Hugh Allan (Buddy) MacMaster, OC, ONS, fiddler (born 18 October 1924 in Timmins, ON; died 20 August 2014 in Judique, NS). Known as "King of the Jigs," Buddy MacMaster was considered a major force in the survival of Cape Breton music and dance.

Alfred Strombergs. Conductor, opera coach, pianist, teacher, b Liepaja, Latvia, 19 Feb 1922, naturalized Canadian 1954, d Toronto 22 Feb 2006; ARCT 1958, ARCCO 1960.

Yves Beaupré. Harpsichord maker, b Montreal 21 Mar 1954; B MUS (Montreal) 1980. He first devoted himself to performance and was trained at the St-Laurent Cegep and at the University of Montreal.

Alvaro Pierri. Guitarist, teacher, b Montevideo, Uruguay, 18 Jan 1953. Born into a family of musicians, he began studying piano at four with his mother, Ada Estades, and one year later he began taking guitar lessons with his aunt, Olga Pierri.

He moved to Canada in 1968, gave his first Canadian recital the following year at Walter Hall, University of Toronto, and made the first of several appearances as soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Al (Alan Douglas) Neil. Pianist, composer, visual artist, author, b Vancouver 26 Mar 1924. He studied with Glenn Nelson and Jean Coulthard but, save for some lessons with Wilf Wylie, was self-taught as a jazz pianist.

Bernie LaBarge (b Bernard Leo Labarge). Guitarist, songwriter, singer, b Ottawa 11 March 1953. LaBarge attended school in Burlington, Ont; he began to teach himself guitar at age 11, and by 1967 was playing professionally.
