John (Charles) McDermott. Tenor, popular singer, b Glasgow, Scotland, 25 March 1955. John McDermott emigrated from Glasgow to Canada with his family in 1965.

Clement Virgo, director, producer, writer (b at Montego Bay, Jamaica 1 June 1966). Clement Virgo came with his family to Canada in 1977 and attended West Preparatory Public School in north Toronto before the family moved to Regent Park, the city's largest public-housing estate, known for its troubles with drugs and crime.

Judith Crawley, "Judy," film producer, director, scriptwriter (b at Ottawa 21 Apr 1914; d there 15 Sept 1986). She was close collaborator and wife of Frank "Budge"CRAWLEY, and her contribution to their company was extensive throughout its history.

Jeffrey (William) Anderson. Radio producer, critic, b Winnipeg 26 Apr 1928; BA (Winnipeg) 1951; M PH history (London) 1960. Though not a practising musician, he studied organ and piano with Hugh Bancroft and became an authority on British composers.

Louise Jobin, costume designer, art director and producer (born Montréal 29 Sep 1944) Louise Jobin's passion for literature and history led to the theatre in 1963, when she manipulated marionettes with Micheline Legendre, a true pioneer in the field.

Pierre Berton, journalist, historian, media personality (b at Whitehorse, YT 12 July 1920; d at Toronto, Ont 30 Nov 2004). Berton was among Canada's best-known writers and was particularly well regarded as a serious popularizer of Canadian history.

Gifford (Jerome) Mitchell. Educator, organist, choir director, b Cobden, Renfrew County, Ont, 29 Apr 1913, d 3 Dec 2006; BA (McGill) 1934, B MUS (Toronto) 1948. He taught history and languages in Westmount, Que, after graduating from McGill University.

He draws on history, ancient ceramics, film and photography to animate his expertly thrown pots. Active in ceramics for over 40 years, Payce has participated in over 150 group and solo exhibitions and numerous artist residencies around the world.

Fritz Brandtner, painter (b at Danzig [Gdansk, Poland], Germany 28 July 1896; d at Montréal 7 Nov 1969). Generally considered to have introduced German expressionism to Canada, Brandtner was trained in Berlin and came to Winnipeg in 1928. He worked as a house painter until L.L.

Haywire. Hard rock band, formed in Charlottetown in 1982 by singer Paul MacAusland, guitarist Marvin Birt, keyboard player David Rashad, and bassist Ron Switzer. Sean Kilbride was the last in a succession of drummers.

Valérie (1969), the first of a group of erotic films now known as "maple-syrup porno," launched the career of director Denis HÉROUX.

Laura Salverson, née Goodman, novelist (b at Winnipeg 9 Dec 1890; d at Toronto 13 July 1970). Daughter of Icelandic immigrants, she lived throughout western Canada after her marriage to George Salverson in 1913.

Brother Basile (b Simon Néron). Ethnomusicologist, teacher, b Roberval, near Chicoutimi, Que, 18 Apr 1906, d Roma, Lesotho, Southern Africa, 5 Sep 1973; L MUS (Montreal) 1941, D MUS (Montreal) 1946. He joined the order of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at St-Hyacinthe in 1918.

Jackie Richardson, actor, singer (born 1947 in Donora, Pennsylvania). Jackie Richardson is an award-winning singer and actor whose career spans more than five decades. She has been called Canada’s reigning queen of jazz, blues and gospel, and has received a Maple Blues Award for lifetime achievement. She is also a Gemini Award and Dora Award-winning actor who has appeared in numerous musical theatre productions, films and television series. In 2014, the Toronto Star named Richardson one of 180 people who have helped shaped the city since it was founded. She was made an Honorary Member of the Order of Canada in 2021.

Norman Eric Webster, journalist (b at Summerside, PEI 4 June 1941). Educated at Bishops College School and then at Bishops U, Webster won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford. Returning to Canada, he joined The Globe and Mail and served successfully in the newspaper's bureaus in Québec C and Ottawa.

MacDermot, (Arthur Terence) Galt. Composer, pianist, b Montreal 18 Dec 1928; BA English and history (Bishop's) 1950, B MUS (Cape Town) 1953? He was raised in several Canadian cities, including Toronto (where he attended Upper Canada College, of which his father, T.W.L.

John Murray Gibbon, writer, publicist, marketer, translator (born 12 April 1875 in Udeweller, Ceylon; died 2 July 1952 in Montréal, QC).

 In 1988, Rebecca Jenkins secured a small part in Anne WHEELER's Cowboys Don't Cry, which generated four Genie Award nominations and a win for best original song. Wheeler cast Jenkins as the lead in her next film, BYE BYE BLUES (1989).

White graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Montréal's Loyola College in 1970 and acquired a Masters in drama from the University of Alberta 2 years later.

Lothaire Bluteau appeared in a short film by Brigitte Sauriol, Bleue brume (1982), then longer ones such as Rien qu'un jeu (1983), also by Sauriol, and Les années de rêves (1984), directed by Jean-Claude Labrecque.
