Engle, Marilyn
(Judith) Marilyn Engle. Pianist, teacher, b Calgary 27 Jul 1946; B MUS (Juilliard) 1969, M SC MUS (Juilliard) 1970, MA (New York) 1975. Marilyn Engle's piano studies in Calgary with Gladys Egbert and in New York with Ilona Kabos led to first prizes in the 1966 CBC Talent Festival and the 1969 J.S. Bach International Competition in Washington, DC. She continued her training with Canada Council support in Geneva in 1970 with Nikita Magaloff and in New York 1970-5 with Adele Marcus and Jeaneane Dowis. Engle recorded three works by Bach (1970, CBC SM-140) and gave concerts and broadcasts in Canada and the USA and several recitals 1975-6 for the New York Friends of Mozart Society.
In 1975 she joined the Department of Music of the University of Calgary, where she continued to teach in 2005. She is also a professor at the Mount Royal College Conservatory, and has been a visiting teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music's Glenn Gould School, the University of Toronto, Oberlin College Conservatory, Academie Franco-Americaine, and other institutes. Engle is a founding member of the Calgary chamber ensemble Aubade, and has adjudicated the Canadian Chopin and Eckhardt-Gramatté competitions. Her paper on Gladys Egbert was published in 1993. Her pupils include Lana Henchell and Michael Kim.
