Sir Archibald Campbell, soldier, colonial administrator (b 12 Mar 1769; d in Eng 6 Oct 1843). After a distinguished military career in India, Portugal and Burma, he became lieutenant-governor of NB in 1831. Aloof and authoritarian, he was soon at odds with the Reform group in the Assembly.

Sir Archibald Campbell, soldier, colonial administrator (b 12 Mar 1769; d in Eng 6 Oct 1843). After a distinguished military career in India, Portugal and Burma, he became lieutenant-governor of NB in 1831. Aloof and authoritarian, he was soon at odds with the Reform group in the Assembly. Though criticized for not curbing the unpopular commissioner of crown lands, Thomas BAILLIE, he placed him at the head of the Executive Council in 1833. When instructed to surrender the crown revenues to the legislature in return for a moderate civil list and to make his Executive Council more acceptable to the Assembly, he balked and was recalled in 1837. His departure was lamented only by the few officials he had sought to protect.
