Leupold, Ulrich

Ulrich (Siegfried) Leupold. Musicologist, Lutheran minister, administrator, b Berlin 15 Jan 1909, d Kitchener, Ont, 9 Jun 1970; PH D musicology (Berlin) 1932, honorary DD (Knox College) 1969. His father was an organist, his mother a voice teacher. He emigrated in 1938 to the USA, settling briefly in Toledo, O, before moving in 1939 to Kitchener, Ont, where he was ordained. He served as a pastor in Kitchener and Maynooth, Ont, until 1945, when he taught New Testament theology and church music at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary and was music director at Waterloo College (see Wilfrid Laurier University). He became dean, and in 1968 principal, of the seminary.

One of the first trained musicologists to settle in Canada, Leupold was a specialist in Lutheran church music. He contributed to many musical and theological journals and reference books and edited collections and individual pieces of church music. He served on many Lutheran and ecumenical councils, in 1965 was chairman of the committee on music of the Lutheran Church of America Commission on Worship, and in 1966 was president of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies.
