Lemuel Cambridge Owen, merchant, politician, premier of PEI (b at Charlottetown 1 Nov 1822; d there 26 Nov 1912). Successful in shipbuilding and trade, Owen, a leading colonial merchant, was postmaster general of the colony from 1860 until elected to the Assembly in 1866.

Lemuel Cambridge Owen, merchant, politician, premier of PEI (b at Charlottetown 1 Nov 1822; d there 26 Nov 1912). Successful in shipbuilding and trade, Owen, a leading colonial merchant, was postmaster general of the colony from 1860 until elected to the Assembly in 1866. As premier 1873-76, Owen supervised the end of the proprietorial landholding system - the cost of which was borne by the federal government as a result of the 1873 Confederation agreement.
