The rail line, which arrived in 1909, made Melfort a trade and cultural centre for the surrounding area. It was incorporated as a village in 1903, as a town in 1907 and a city in 1980.

Melfort

 Melfort, Sask, incorporated as a city in 1980, population 5576 (2011c), 5192 (2006c). The City of Melfort is located in central Saskatchewan, 175 km northeast of Saskatoon. The first settlers came to this area in 1892 and began a settlement called Stoney Creek about 2 km southeast of the present townsite. In 1902 the settlement was moved to its present location where it was surveyed by the Canadian Northern Railway. Mrs Reginald Beatty, the first woman to settle in the district, was asked by railway officials to name the town and chose the name of her birthplace in Scotland.

Melfort is the service centre of one of Saskatchewan's richest agricultural areas, the Carrot River valley, a territory that has never known drought or severe crop failure.
