Mount St Elias, elev 5489 m, the second-highest mountain in Canada, a boundary peak between Alaska and the YT, is located in the St Elias Range, 43 km SW of Mt LOGAN. First sighted in 1747 by a member of Vitus BERING's Russian expedition, its name derived from nearby Cape St Elias, named by the Bering Expedition. In May 1778 Capt James COOK attached an elevation of 5517 m, astonishingly close to that officially accepted today. The first successful ascent was made by a large Italian party led by the duke of Abruzzi in July 1897.
