Founded on the north shore of the St Lawrence River in 1634 by Sieur de Laviolette as a trading post. The town, located between Quebec city and Montreal derived its name from the three mouths of the St Maurice River, on which it is located.

University of British Columbia. Non-denominational undergraduate and graduate teaching and research institution incorporated 1908 in Vancouver, absorbing the McGill-affiliated McGill University College of Vancouver in 1915 and awarding its first degrees in 1916.

Manitoba's capital city, Winnipeg is located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers on a site once known to the Cree as 'Murky Water.' Fort Rouge was established there in 1738 by Pierre de La Vérendrye, a fur trader and explorer.

Canada's capital city, situated in Ontario on the Ottawa River. Settled in the early 1800s, it was called Bellows' Landing (1810), Richmond Landing (1811), and Bytown (1826) after Col John By, who, 1826-32, supervised the building of the Rideau Canal.

City incorporated in 1924 and located on Lake Ontario, 53 km east of Toronto. In 1778 the first settlers in the area, United Empire Loyalists, were given Crown land. In 1850 the community was declared a village, and the name Oshawa was adopted.

Capital city of Saskatchewan. Originally called 'Pile of Bones,' from the Cree word Wascana, it became the capital of the Northwest Territories in 1882 with the coming of the railway and was renamed Regina after Queen Victoria.

Mount Saint Vincent University, Rockingham (Halifax) NS. Non-denominational (formerly Roman Catholic) institution, known familiarly as 'The Mount,' founded by the Sisters of Charity but in 1990 owned and operated by a lay board of governors.

Music at Sharon. Annual summer concert series at the Temple of the Children of Peace at Sharon, near Newmarket, Ontario, presented 1981-90 under the auspices of the York Pioneer and Historical Society.

Montreal, Quebec is a city located on the island of the same name at the junction of the St Lawrence and Ottawa rivers in the province of Québec. The island is one of a cluster that also includes Ile Jésus (which became part of the city of Laval in 1965) and the islands of Bizard and Perrot.

University of Windsor. Founded in 1857 at Windsor, Ont, as Assumption College (Roman Catholic). It became a university in 1953 and was granted incorporation as the non-denominational University of Windsor in 1963, affiliating at the same time with Essex College.

Acadia University. Non-denominational, predominantly undergraduate institution in Wolfville, NS, with some graduate programs at the master's level (not in music).

1931 - 68A School of Sacred Music was established in 1931 by Father Conrad Latour, founder and first conductor of the university's Schola cantorum, which existed 1934-43.

Canadian Mennonite Bible College (Canadian Mennonite University beginning 1998). School of theology, liberal arts, and music, founded in 1947 in Winnipeg by the Conference of Mennonites in Canada.

Memorial University of Newfoundland. Non-denominational university in St John's. Memorial University evolved from Memorial University College, founded in 1925 as a memorial to Newfoundlanders killed in World War I. It gained university status in 1949 and moved to a new campus in the city in 1961.

Bishop's University. Founded in 1843 in Lennoxville, near Sherbrooke, Que, by George Jehoshaphat Mountain, the third Anglican bishop of Quebec, as a liberal arts college. Its foundation was ratified by an act of the Quebec Legislative Assembly.

When the Dept of Music was founded in 1906, it offered only conservatory-type instruction under the direction of Abbie Helmer Vining (1906-7). W.L. Wright, afterfour years' study in Berlin with Leopold Godowsky, took over in 1907 and remained director until 1947.
