Duncan is best known as a painter in watercolour. His many works in this medium are landscapes and street scenes which record every aspect of city life. In Montréal he sketched sporting events, parades, fires, market vendors, sleighing and ice-cutting.

Ligue nationale d'improvisation (LNI) is an improvisational theatresports group devised in Montréal in the 70s whose rules imitate those of hockey, and whose "matches" are fought on a skating rink.

Robert Wakeham Pilot, painter (b at St John's 9 Oct 1898; d at Montréal 17 Dec 1967), stepson of painter Maurice CULLEN. Pilot's best pictures are moody views of the St Lawrence River, such as Quebec from Levis, and seascapes of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Recognized for her brilliant technique and onstage intensity, Shauna Rolston has a wide-ranging repertoire. A champion of contemporary music, she has given numerous premieres of works by contemporary composers, many written especially for her.

James (Arthur) Stark. Musicologist, tenor, b Minneapolis 11 Jun 1938, naturalized Canadian 1968; BA (Minnesota) 1960, M MUS (Toronto) 1967, PH D (Toronto) 1973. He studied with Roy Schuessler in Minnesota, and Aksel Schiøtz in Toronto.

Catherine M. (Marie) (b McFadden) Young. Singer, teacher, b Clearfield, Pennsylvania, 1931; M MUS (ESM, Rochester) 1960. Young gave many solo and oratorio performances, and became head of the voice department at the Victoria Conservatory of Music in 1971.

José Evangelista. Composer, teacher, b Valencia, Spain, 5 Aug 1943; premier prix composition (Valencia Cons) 1967, L SC physics (Valencia) 1967, M MUS composition (Montreal) 1973, D MUS composition (McGill) 1984.

Jessie Georgina (J.G.) Sime, writer, essayist, lecturer, social activist (b at Hamilton, Scotland, 12 Feb 1868; d at Wootton, England, 13 Sep 1958). Though born in Scotland, J.G. Sime spent her childhood in London, England.

Ernest Lindner, artist (b at Vienna, Austria 1 May 1897; d at Saskatoon 4 Nov 1988).

Myrna Kostash, writer, journalist, translator (b at Edmonton 2 Sept 1944). Born and raised in Edmonton, Alta, Myrna Kostash studied at the Universities of Alberta and Washington and received her BA from the University of Alberta in 1965.

In 1940 Brassard began his important work in the research, compilation, editing, and harmonization of French-Canadian folksongs.

Donald (James Fletcher) Hadfield. Organist-choirmaster, b Winnipeg 23 Oct 1931, d there 18 Jan 2005; ARCM 1950, BA (St John's College) 1957, B PED (Manitoba) 1958. He studied organ 1946-53 with Douglas Bodle and Hugh Bancroft .

Dembeck String Quartet. Toronto group active 1950-61 under the leadership of the violinist John Dembeck. The members were Dembeck and Stanley Kolt (violins), Robert Warburton (viola), and Cornelius Ysselstyn (cello).

Isabelle Papineau-Couture (b Baudoin). Freelancer, author, b Montreal 6 Jul 1918, d there 22 Oct 1987; BA (Montreal) 1938. She married Jean Papineau-Couture in 1944. From 1953 to 1968 she was responsible for managing sales and fund raisings at the Société de musique canadienne.

Billy Newton-Davis, singer, songwriter (born 26 April 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio).

Greta Kraus. Harpsichordist, pianist, accompanist, teacher, b Vienna 3 Aug 1907, naturalized Canadian 1944, d Toronto, 30 Mar 1998. She entered the Vienna Academy of Music in 1923 and received a Music Teacher's Diploma in 1930.

Eric (Donald) McLean. Critic, historian, pianist, b Montreal 25 Sep 1919, d there 19 Aug 2002; honorary LL D (Concordia) 1995.

Joseph-Élie Savaria. Organist, teacher, b Lachine, near Montreal, 16 Dec 1886, d Montreal 4 Oct 1973; lauréat (AMQ) 1903. He studied piano, solfège, and harmony with Jean-Noël Charbonneau.

Ranald Shean. Violinist, teacher, conductor, b Edmonton 6 May 1914; d 12 Apr 1997. Ranald Shean took violin lessons in Edmonton with Percy Humphrey, followed by study in Vancouver in the 1930s with Gregori Garbovitsky.
