Pierre-Étienne Fortin, politician, surgeon, conservationist (b at Verchères, LC 14 Dec 1823; d at La Prairie, Qué 15 June 1888). After graduating from the Petit Séminaire de Montréal (1841) and McGill College (1845), he practised medicine at GROSSE ÎLE (1847-48).

Harry Lambert Welsh, physicist, educator (b at Aurora, Ont 23 Mar 1910; d at Toronto 23 July 1984). He was educated and spent his career at U of T, except for 1931-33 in Göttingen and 1943-45 in Ottawa as lieutenant-commander of naval operational research.

Jeanne Fisher Manery, biochemist (b at Chesley, Ont 6 July 1908; d at Toronto 9 Sept 1986).

Walter Palmer Thompson, plant geneticist, university administrator (b near Decewsville, Ont 3 Apr 1889; d at Saskatoon 30 Mar 1970). Raised on a farm in Haldimand County, Ont, Thompson graduated from U of T in 1910 and received his PhD from Harvard in 1914.

John Patrick Tully, oceanographer (b at Brandon, Man 29 Nov 1906; d at Nanaimo, BC 19 May 1987).

Philip J. Currie, palaeontologist, museum curator (born 13 March 1949 in Brampton, ON). In the early 1980s, Currie played a lead role in the founding of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Drumheller, Alberta. He later became the namesake of another institution, the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, which opened in September 2015 near Grande Prairie, Alberta. Much of Currie’s research has focussed on fossils from Alberta’s Dinosaur Provincial Park and other Cretaceous sites, as well as the evolution of carnivorous dinosaurs and the origin of birds.

Le Caine, Hugh. Physicist, composer, b Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ont, 27 May 1914, d Ottawa 3 Jul 1977; M SC (Queen's) 1939, PH D (Birmingham) 1952, honorary D MUS (McGill) 1971, honorary LLD (Toronto) 1973, honorary D MUS (Queen's) 1974.

Walter Kohn, theoretical physicist, professor, Nobel laureate in chemistry (born 9 March 1923 in Vienna, Austria; died 19 April 2016, Santa Barbara, United States). A refugee in England at the outbreak of the Second World War, Kohn was arrested in 1940 as an “enemy alien” and sent to Canada, where he was held in detention camps until 1942 (see Canada and the Holocaust). After his release, he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto and Harvard University. He taught for many years at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and later at the University of California, San Diego and was the founding director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Kohn was at the forefront of solid-state physics and quantum chemistry during his scientific career. For his work on “density functional theory” he was named co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998.

Walter Andrew Kenyon, archaeologist, museum curator (b near Brantford, Ont 21 Feb 1917; d at Toronto 10 Sept 1986). He joined the Royal Ontario Museum in 1956 as assistant curator of ethnology, later earning Canada's first PhD degree in archaeology (U of T, 1967).

William Howard Rapson, chemical engineer, professor, consultant (b at Toronto 15 Sept 1912). After 12 years of research at the Canadian International Paper Co, Hawkesbury, Ont, he returned to U of T, where he had received his doctorate in chemical engineering in 1941.

George William Taylor, clergyman, entomologist, conchologist (b at Derby, Eng 1854; d 22 Aug 1912, buried at Nanaimo, BC). After immigrating to Victoria, BC, in 1882, he studied theology and was ordained an Anglican priest in 1886.

Stanley John Hughes, mycologist (b at Llanelly, Wales 17 Sept 1918). A naturalized Canadian, Hughes worked as an assistant mycologist at the Commonwealth Mycological Institute in Kew, England (1945-52), and in 1952 joined Agriculture Canada in Ottawa as a research scientist.

William Edward Gallie, surgeon, educator (born at Barrie, Ont 29 Jan 1882; d at Toronto 25 Sept 1959). He graduated from Barrie Collegiate Institute in 1899 and received his MD from the University of Toronto in 1903.

David Douglas, botanist (b at Scone near Perth, Scotland 25 July 1799; d in Hawaii 12 July 1834). Douglas became an apprentice gardener at age 11; at 20 he moved to the Botanic Gardens, Glasgow, and at 23 became a collector for the Horticultural Society of London in North America.

Joseph-Clovis-Kemner Laflamme, priest, educator, scientist (b at St-Anselme, Canada E 18 Sept 1849; d at Québec C 6 July 1910). After studying at the SÉMINAIRE DE QUÉBEC and later spending periods at Harvard and in Europe, Laflamme became professor of geology and mineralogy at Laval in 1870.

Robert Ferguson Legget, civil engineer (b at Liverpool, Eng 29 Sept 1904; died at Ottawa, Ont 17 Apr 1994).

James Alexander Teit, ethnographer (b in Shetland Is, Scot 1864; d at Spences Bridge, BC 30 Oct 1922).

Edmund Murton Walker, entomologist (b at Windsor, Ont 5 Oct 1877; d at Toronto 14 Feb 1969).

Howard Fredeen, agricultural research scientist (b at Macrorie, Sask 10 Dec 1921).

Kenneth George McKenzie, neurosurgeon (b at Toronto 13 June 1892; d there 11 Feb 1964). After graduating with an MB from the University of Toronto in 1914, he saw medical service overseas during WWI.
