University of New Brunswick. Founded in 1785 in Fredericton as the Academy of Arts and Science. It became the College of New Brunswick in 1800 (enrolment restricted to Anglicans) and King's College in 1828, the same year that it granted its first degrees.

On an order from Paul-Émile Cardinal Léger the Faculty of Music was founded 18 Oct 1950 during the rectorship of Mgr Olivier Maurault, whose efforts to establish such a faculty dated from 1939 and became linked with those of the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Music in 1947.

Memorial University of Newfoundland. Non-denominational university in St John's. Memorial University evolved from Memorial University College, founded in 1925 as a memorial to Newfoundlanders killed in World War I. It gained university status in 1949 and moved to a new campus in the city in 1961.

One of Canada's largest multidisciplinary arts complexes, Montreal's Place des Arts (PDA) grew from three halls in the 1960s to four in the 1970s and five in the 1990s. With the integration of the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (1992), the PDA become a major North American integrated centre for both the visual and performing arts. In 2011, a sixth hall the Mason symphonique, opened its doors. The complex also houses rehearsal halls, boutiques, underground parking, theatre storage facilities, restaurants, and office space.

University of Quebec/Université du Québec. Network of higher education and research establishments, created by an act of the Quebec National Assembly 18 Dec 1968. It includes four constituent universities: Montreal, Trois-Rivières (each with a Module de musique), Chicoutimi, and Rimouski.

The École Notre-Dame d'Acadie Music was a preparatory school administered by the sisters of Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur.

Music at Sharon. Annual summer concert series at the Temple of the Children of Peace at Sharon, near Newmarket, Ontario, presented 1981-90 under the auspices of the York Pioneer and Historical Society.

McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont. Founded in 1887 as the result of the union of Toronto Baptist College and Woodstock College (a Baptist preparatory school), and named after Senator William McMaster. The first degrees were awarded in 1894.

University of Victoria. Non-denominational university in Victoria, BC. It is the successor of Victoria College, affiliated 1903-62 first with McGill University, then with the University of British Columbia.

University of Trinity College. Church of England university founded in Toronto in 1851 (it received its royal charter in 1852) by the first bishop of Toronto, John Strachan, after King's College, precursor of the University of Toronto, became secular in 1850.

Trinity College of Music, London. Established in 1872 to provide a comprehensive music education and, through its external examinations department, to examine and award certificates and diplomas (ATCL, LTCL, FTCL).

McGill University. Founded in Montreal in 1821 as the University of McGill College. McGill University is the chief English-language university in the province of Quebec and houses one of Canada's most established music programs.

Downtown Toronto arena, home of the famed Maple Leaf hockey team and venue for other sports and entertainment activities. Designed by Ross & Macdonald with associates Jack Ryrie and Mackenzie Waters, it was built in 1931 at a cost of about $1.

Founded 9 December 1944 as Académie canadienne-française by a group of writers led by Victor Barbeau, its goal was to serve and defend the French language and culture in Canada. The Académie changed its name in 1992.

Conservatories and academies. A conservatory-type-school can be described as a not-for-profit institution for teaching music where individual instruction is the dominant method of teaching.

​Founded in 1968 by Professor Neil J. Michaud, Université de Moncton’s Department of Music continues a prominent musical tradition in Acadia, teaching music exclusively in French.

When the Dept of Music was founded in 1906, it offered only conservatory-type instruction under the direction of Abbie Helmer Vining (1906-7). W.L. Wright, afterfour years' study in Berlin with Leopold Godowsky, took over in 1907 and remained director until 1947.

University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown. Non-denominational university established in 1969 by the amalgamation of Prince of Wales College, founded in 1834, and St Dunstan's U, founded in 1855.

The Faculty of Music at Western University (known legally as the University of Western Ontario) offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Located in London, Ontario, it is one of the largest music schools in Canada. Music education at the university began in 1934 and evolved into an affiliated music school in 1942. The Faculty of Music was established in 1968 and was renamed the Don Wright Faculty of Music in 2002. In 2014, the faculty had more than 120 members (35 in Music Education, 63 in performance, and 32 in Research and Composition) and an enrolment of more than 600 students.

Community colleges. Post-secondary, non-university educational institutions in English-speaking Canada (for Quebec, see Cegeps). Community colleges do not generally grant degrees, although many offer university transfer credit, and most confer diplomas.
