Fauteux, André

André Fauteux, sculptor (b at Dunnville, Ont 15 Mar 1946). He received his basic art education at Central Technical School in Toronto and worked with Anthony Caro (York University, 1974-75). Fauteux is known for the elegant, controlled line of drawing that characterizes his abstract sculptures. Profoundly influenced by the minimalist paintings of Kenneth Noland, Fauteux has successfully dealt with and transformed Noland's painterly concerns to his sculptures. The carefully articulated thin outlines enclose the volume of each work, but the flatness of the steel, the convergence of verticals and horizontals at sharp, dramatic angles, and the surrounding negative space defy the mass and weight of the sculptures. Fauteux's approach uses the interaction of geometric shapes as a point of departure in the building of a sculptural form. In 1987 he received the Francis Greenberger Prize from the Guggenheim Museum and was awarded a major commission by the city of Barcelona. Fauteux has exhibited regularly in Toronto, New York, Chicago, London and Barcelona and is represented in the collections of many Canadian and international museums.
