Daniel Barnes. Drummer, composer, arranger, b Toronto 24 May 1965. Barnes began playing the drums at age five, and at age 16 was performing professionally. He studied with Claude Ranger and Jim Blackley, and studied piano in Toronto with Bob Fenton and theory with Paul Read.

Daniel Barnes. Drummer, composer, arranger, b Toronto 24 May 1965. Barnes began playing the drums at age five, and at age 16 was performing professionally. He studied with Claude Ranger and Jim Blackley, and studied piano in Toronto with Bob Fenton and theory with Paul Read. In 1987 and 1988 Barnes attended the Summer Jazz Workshop at the Banff Centre for the Arts.

In 1989 he formed a contemporary jazz quintet with pianist Dave Restivo, and has subsequently performed with a number of jazz, pop, and international artists including John Alcorn; Holly Cole; Molly Johnson; Joe Sealy; and The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. He has toured the US, Ethiopia, and the Caribbean, and continues to perform at jazz festivals throughout Canada. In 2003 Barnes released the LP Culmination with Festival Distribution (ROM07).
