Ange Duquesne de Menneville Duquesne, Marquis, naval officer, governor general of New France 1752-55 (b at Toulon, France c 1700; d at Antony, France 17 Sept 1778). He joined the navy as a boy and saw action in the War of the Austrian Succession. Former governor La Galissoniere put his name forward to succeed La Jonquiere in New France in 1752. Duquesne was instructed to secure the Ohio Valley, where French sovereignty was being threatened by English traders, and to this end in 1753-54 he sent an expedition south under Paul Marin de La Malgue (also La Marque) to establish a series of forts. A second expedition in 1754 completed the occupation of the area with the building of Fort Duquesne [Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania].
