Gutteridge immigrated to BC in 1911 and organized the BC Women's Suffrage League. Her responsibilities there kindled a turn to socialist politics and membership in the CO-OPERATIVE COMMONWEALTH FEDERATION. In Mar 1937 she was elected as a CCF representative to Vancouver City Council, becoming its first woman member.
