Hiram Blanchard, lawyer, politician, premier of Nova Scotia (b at West River, NS 17 Jan 1820; d at Halifax 17 Dec 1874). Blanchard began his legal career at Port Hood, moving to Halifax only after election as Reform (Liberal) member for Inverness County in 1859. His support of CONFEDERATION resulted in his appointment as attorney general and government leader (succeeding Sir Charles TUPPER) in the new Cabinet of July 1867. The Reform Party was defeated in the September general elections, however, and Blanchard served as Opposition leader 1871-74.
