Douglas Mason Fisher, politician, journalist (born 19 September 1919 in Sioux Lookout, ON; died 18 September 2009). Educated at the University of Toronto, Queen's and the University of London, he served overseas during WWII. Known as "The Giant Killer" after his first political campaign and smashing victory over C.D.

Emil Ludwig Fackenheim, philosopher, theologian (b at Halle, Germany 22 June 1916; d at Jerusalem 19 September 2003). Educated at the University of Halle, and ordained a rabbi in 1939, he fled Germany after a short imprisonment in a concentration camp.

Ronald Gilmour Everson, poet (b at Oshawa, Ont 18 Nov 1903; d at Burlington, Ont. 16 Feb. 1992). Educated at U of T and Osgoode Hall, Everson practised law before moving into public relations.

John Skirving Ewart, lawyer, publicist (b at Toronto, 11 Aug 1849; d at Ottawa 21 Feb 1933). Educated at Upper Canada College and Osgoode Hall, Toronto, Ewart moved to Winnipeg to practise law in 1882. He was counsel for the French-speaking minority in the MANITOBA SCHOOLS dispute, 1890-96.

William Paterson Ewen, painter (born 7 April 1925 in Montréal, QC; died 17 February 2002 in London, ON).

Walter Hamilton Ewing, trapshooter (born 11 February 1878 in Montréal, QC; died 25 June 1945 in Montréal). Ewing won the gold medal in individual trap shooting at the 1908 Olympic Games in London, England.

Sam Etcheverry, football player (born 20 May 1930 in Carlsbad, New Mexico; died 29 August 2009 in Montréal, QC). Etcheverry turned professional with the Montreal Alouettes in 1952, and later earned his nickname of "The Rifle" as a quarterback.

Robert Daniel Emslie, baseball player (b at Guelph, Canada W 27 Jan 1859; d at St Thomas, Ont 26 Apr 1943). Emslie played baseball in Ontario and Kansas before a brief major-league pitching career in which he won 32 games for Baltimore in 1884.

Arthur Jacob Epp, "Jake," politician (b at St Boniface, Man 1 Sept 1939). The son of a Mennonite preacher, Epp graduated from U of Man in 1961 and then taught high school for 11 years in Steinbach, Man, where he was a town councillor 1970-71.

Gordon Neil Fisher, publisher (b at Montréal 9 Dec 1928; d at Toronto 8 Aug 1985). Fisher was president of SOUTHAM INC, one of the largest newspaper chains in Canada. He attended Lower Canada College, Trinity College School and McGill, where he studied engineering.

Thomas Dixon Byron Evans, soldier (b at Hamilton, Ont 22 Mar 1860; d at Battle Creek, Mich 23 Aug 1908). The outstanding Canadian soldier of his generation, he joined the 43rd (Ottawa and Carleton) Rifles in 1880, and was

George J. (John) Dyke. Violinist, conductor, teacher, impresario, critic, b St Blazey, Cornwall, England, 23 Mar 1864, d Victoria, BC, 16 Mar 1940. He studied in St Austell and in Plymouth with John Parde (violin) and W. Willoughby (organ).

Duff Gibson, skeleton racer (b at Vaughan, Ont, 11 Aug 1966). Duff Gibson is Canada's first Olympic gold medallist in skeleton and, 39 years old at the time of his win, he currently holds the record for being the oldest individual gold medalist in Winter Olympic history.

Sir Samuel Cunard, merchant, shipowner (b at Halifax 21 Nov 1787; d at London, Eng 28 Apr 1865).

 De Meurons, Swiss infantry regiment raised 1781; transferred 1795 to the British army. It served in India until October 1806, then moved to England, and was sent to Lower Canada in August 1813.

Francis Napier Denison, weather forecaster, engineer, scientist (b at Toronto, Canada W 19 Apr 1866; d at Victoria 24 June 1946). An innovative scientist, Denison was known to thousands of Victorians as "our weatherman.

Jacques-René de Brisay Denonville, Marquis de, governor general of New France, 1685-89 (b at Denonville, France 10 Dec 1637; d there 22 Sept 1710). He arrived at Québec 1 August 1685 at a dangerous point in the colony's conflict with the IROQUOIS and English.

Norman Reade DePoe, broadcaster, journalist (b at Portland, Ore 4 May 1917; d at Toronto 13 Mar 1980). In his prime in the eventful 1960s, he was for 8 years CBC-TV's chief Ottawa correspondent and a household name as Canadian broadcasting's star reporter on national and international affairs.
