Robert Marshall Blount Fulford, editor, essayist, critic (b at Ottawa 13 Feb 1932). Editor of SATURDAY NIGHT magazine 1968-87, Fulford has been a champion of liberalism in somewhat the same tradition as J.W. DAFOE and Frank UNDERHILL.

Francis (née Frances) Marion Beynon, journalist, novelist, suffragist (born 26 May 1884 in Streetsville, ON; died 5 October 1951 in Winnipeg, MB). Francis Marion Beynon has been noted for her courage as a pacifist, her outspoken anti-religious views and her anti-racism.

Thomas King, CM, novelist, short-story writer, essayist, screenwriter, photographer (born 24 April 1943 in Roseville, California). A Member of the Order of Canada and two-time nominee for the Governor General’s Award, Thomas King is often described as one of the finest contemporary Indigenous writers in North America.

Wabanakwut Kinew, hip hop artist, broadcaster, university administrator, author, politician (born 31 December 1981 in Kenora, ON). An Ojibwa activist and public intellectual, Wab Kinew began his career as a musician and rapper with the hip hop group Dead Indians. He gained national attention through his radio and television journalism for the CBC, including 8th Fire, a television series on Indigenous issues. Kinew’s 2015 memoir, The Reason You Walk, was a national bestseller and finalist for the RBC Taylor Prize. Kinew was elected to the Manitoba legislature in 2016, despite controversial tweets and rap lyrics that dogged his campaign. Similarly, revelations of stayed domestic assault charges from 2003 threatened to derail his bid to become leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party, though he was named leader in September 2017.

Paul-Émile Léger, cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church (b at Valleyfield, Qué (now Salaberry-de-Valleyfield) 25 Apr 1904; d at Montreal 13 Nov 1991), brother of Jules LÉGER.

Charles (Warrington) Hutton. Organist, music dealer, conductor, b St John's, Nfld, 20 Aug 1861, d there 1 Feb 1949. He was educated in Charlottetown and at the French college, St Pierre, and in 1880 became organist-choirmaster at St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cathedral in St John's.

Tina Keeper, politician, actor, social activist (b at Norway House, Man 20 March 1962). Tina Keeper is an award-winning actor whose work on- and off- screen has raised public awareness of several issues facing contemporary Indigenous Canadians.

Elsie Park Gowan (née Young), playwright (b at Helensburgh, Scotland 9 September 1905; d at Edmonton 2 Feb 1999). Gowan immigrated with her family to Edmonton in 1912 and worked as a rural teacher prior to attending the University of Alberta to acquire an Honours BA in History (1926-30).

Lise Payette (née Ouimet), OQ, broadcaster, politician, writer and feminist activist (born 29 August 1931 in Verdun, Quebec; died 5 September 2018). A trailblazer in provincial politics, Payette was among the first women to sit in Quebec’s National Assembly. Prior to her 1976 election under the Parti Québécois banner, she pursued a successful career as a radio and television host with Radio-Canada. In 1979, she became the first minister of state for the Status of Women and oversaw a major family law reform that would significantly alter the Civil Code.

Sarah Anne Curzon, poet, journalist, editor, playwright (b at Birmingham, England c 1833; d at Toronto 1898). The daughter of George Philips Vincent, a glass manufacturer of the provincial English middle class, she enjoyed a ladies-school education and private tutoring.

It highlights the most important films, whether in terms of box office success or international acclaim, and covers both narrative features and documentaries. It also draws attention to an aspect of filmmaking that still has difficulty finding its place: women’s cinema.

Alfred Pellan, painter (born 16 May 1906 in Québec City, Québec; died 31 October 1988 in ​Laval). In the mid-1940s Pellan began illustrating poetry books and designed costumes and sets for the theatre. During this period he developed his mature style.

He excelled in primary school, but lack of money apparently barred his way to a classical education. His self-education and natural reserve explain the "proud independence" which impressed his contemporaries.

Doris Hilda Anderson, née McCubbin, writer, editor, activist (b at Calgary, Alta 10 Nov 1921; d at Toronto 2 Mar 2007). After graduating from teachers' college in 1940, Doris Anderson worked for a few years and then returned to academics at the University of Alberta to earn her BA (1945).

Claude Gauvreau, poet and playwright (b at Montréal 19 Aug 1925; d at Montréal 7 July 1971). An unusual character, visionary, iconoclast, polemist and militant AUTOMATISTES, this writer, whose vast body of work was neglected during his lifetime, was a pioneer of modernity in Québec theatre.

Filmmaking is a powerful form of cultural and artistic expression, as well as a highly profitable commercial enterprise. From a practical standpoint, filmmaking is a business involving large sums of money and a complex division of labour. This labour is involved, roughly speaking, in three sectors: production, distributionand exhibition. The history of the Canadian film industry has been one of sporadic achievement accomplished in isolation against great odds. Canadian cinema has existed within an environment where access to capital for production, to the marketplace for distribution and to theatres for exhibition has been extremely difficult. The Canadian film industry, particularly in English Canada, has struggled against the Hollywood entertainment monopoly for the attention of an audience that remains largely indifferent toward the domestic industry. The major distribution and exhibition outlets in Canada have been owned and controlled by foreign interests. The lack of domestic production throughout much of the industry’s history can only be understood against this economic backdrop.
