(James) Paul Green. Educator, conductor, arranger, b Sydney, NS, 15 Apr 1929; ARCT euphonium 1957, B MUS (Toronto) 1954, M MUS (ESM Rochester) 1959, PH D (ESM Rochester) 1974. Following graduation from the University of Toronto he was head of the music department and conductor of the concert band 1955-65 at T.L. Kennedy Secondary School in Mississauga, Ont. He served 1963-5 as conductor of the Salvation Army's Dovercourt Citadel Band in Toronto. He taught 1964-6 at the Ontario Ministry of Education's Summer School of Music.

In 1965 Green joined the faculty of music at the University of Western Ontario, where he has taught brass and woodwind techniques and conducting, has given graduate courses in the psychology of music and the philosophy of music education, and served 1969-79 as chairman of the music education department. He conducted the university's Symphonic Band 1969-70 and its Faculty of Music Brass Choir 1965-70.

Green was chairman 1963-5 of the Instrumental Music Curriculum Revision Committee which produced the report Intermediate and Senior Divisions Instrumental Music (Ontario Ministry of Education, 1967). He was also president 1964-5 of the OMEA, Ontario representative to the CAUSM Committee of Curricular Standards, whose work resulted in Standards (CAUSM, 1969), and a member 1977-81 of the editorial committee for the CAUSM Journal. He was chairman 1978-80 of the Music Discipline Group of the Committee on Academic Planning of the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies. He began examining for the WOCM in 1965 and has adjudicated at many competition festivals.

Green is the composer of Stephanos for band (Salvationist Publishing, 1978) and co-author and arranger, with Kenneth Bray, of the series of wind instrument instruction books Solos for Schools (GVT 1978-81). Green has written articles for many educational publications and is a contributor to EMC.
