William Carpenter Bompas, Church of England missionary, bishop (b at London, Eng 20 Jan 1834; d at Cariboo Crossing [Carcross], YT 9 June 1906). Bompas left England in 1865 and spent the next 40 years in the Canadian North, becoming the first bishop of Athabasca in 1874, first bishop of Mackenzie River in 1884 and first bishop of Selkirk (Yukon) in 1891. In response to his appeals, a detachment of North-West Mounted Police was sent to the Yukon in 1894. A prolific writer, his works included The Diocese of Mackenzie River (1888), Northern Lights on the Bible (1892) and The Symmetry of Scripture (1896).
