Chénier, Jean-Olivier

Jean-Olivier Chénier, medical doctor and PATRIOTE (b at Lachine or Montréal 9 Dec 1806; d at St-Eustache, LC 14 Dec 1837). Admitted to the practice of medicine in 1828, Chénier set up his offices in the village of St-Benoît [Mirabel] and quickly became involved in politics with the Patriote leaders of the Deux-Montagnes region. He moved his practice to St-Eustache in 1836. He played a very active role in the popular assemblies of 1836 and 1837, which called for the boycott of British goods and which, in the fall of 1837, suggested replacing justices of the peace and militia officers named by the government with people chosen in popular elections. Chénier was the main organizer of the St-Eustache camp during the armed resistance of the "Patriotes du Nord." He was killed in combat when, under the command of John COLBORNE, the regular army and volunteers overcame the fortified positions being defended by Chénier and his men at ST-EUSTACHE.
