To celebrate its 30th anniversary, The Canadian Encyclopedia created 30 lists of 30 things that make us proud to be Canadian, from famous people and historic events, to iconic foods and influential artists.

Some Canadian animals, like the beaver or the polar bear, are among the country’s most recognizable icons. But with 20 natural regions , Canada is incredibly large and diverse. More than 190 mammals, 420 birds, 40 reptiles, 40 amphibians, 1,100 fish and 18,500 insects call Canada home. Below is a list of 30 animals native to Canada or Canadian waters.
