William Baerg. Choir conductor, educator, b Bassano, southeast of Calgary, 24 Feb 1938; ARCT 1961, BA (Goshen College) 1962, M MUS (Peabody Cons) 1971. After conducting studies 1963-6 with Kurt Thomas and Martin Stephani in Germany, he taught 1966-70 at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College and College of the Arts and, after graduate studies 1970-2 at the Peabody Cons, returned to the college to become chairman of the music department and conductor of the college's Oratorio Choir and A Cappella Choir, and he continued to hold these positions in 1990. The A Cappella Choir has been heard over CBC radio and has toured in Canada. Baerg also lectured 1973-5 at the University of Manitoba and was the founder and conductor 1973-8 of the CBC Winnipeg Singers. He conducted the Holiday Festival Singers in a 1974 recording of Victor Davies'Beowulf (3-Leap Frog LFR-1-83). He became one of the two regular guest conductors of the Mennonite Community Orchestra in 1978. In 1983 Baerg conducted the Mennonite Singers in a selection of Songs of the Mennonite Faith (Dueck WRC1-3090) used in the film And When They Shall Ask (Dueck Film Productions 1983).
