Cheltenham Badlands

The Cheltenham Badlands are a rock formation in Southern Ontario made of red-coloured ridges and gullies. They are located in the Town of Caledon within the Regional Municipality of Peel, Ontario, within a 36.6-hectare property of the same name owned by the Ontario Heritage Trust. The badlands are an exposed section of the Queenston Shale, a vast swath of shale rock that crosses Southern Ontario. Exposed through erosion caused by early farming practices, the badlands are a curious case of a natural wonder created through human activity.

Continental Divides in Canada

A continental divide is a ridge or natural boundary of elevated terrain that separates the drainage basins of a continent. Each drainage basin contributes its water to river systems, which in turn flow into distinct larger bodies of water, such as oceans. The main continental divide in Canada follows the ridge of the Rocky Mountains.

Muskeg

Muskeg (from Cree maskek and Ojibwe mashkiig, meaning “grassy bog”) is a type of northern landscape characterized by a wet environment, vegetation and peat deposits. Chiefly used in North America, the term muskeg escapes precise scientific definition. It encompasses various types of wetlands found in the boreal zone, including bogs, fens, swamps and mires. In Canada, muskeg and other peatlands cover up to 1.2 million km2, or 12 per cent of the country’s surface.

Vegetation Regions (Plain-Language Summary)

Canada has seven primary vegetation regions, in addition to the marine flora found along the country’s coasts. Each region is characterized by distinct plant communities. The plants in each region are mostly determined by climate. Other factors that determine which plants grow in which region include geology, soil composition and erosion, water drainage patterns and human interference.
